Canolfan Soar Merthyr

Designing the fabric for the interiors of the new Soar Welsh centre combined my long interest in Welsh chapels with designing and weaving furnishing fabrics.

The interior of this former Welsh chapel has been sensitively and creatively transformed into a thriving theatre and arts venue. The stunning plaster work on the walls and celling restored in their original vibrant colours as with the piped organ.

The design for the fabric to be used on the chapel pews needed to reflect in colour and in pattern the Welsh tradition as well as connect with its confident new Welsh identity.

Woven in 100% wool and in colours found on the existing interior details, Soar fabric has the echoes of the traditional Welsh tapestry blankets adapted to be suitable for a modern setting and use.
